New migrant centres in Greece have been agreed by the EU, including a replacement for Moria.
The European Commission has agreed a plan with Greek authorities and EU agencies to establish a new reception centre on the Greek island of Lesvos by early September 2021, after the fires that destroyed the Moria camp this September.
The memorandum signed sets out the respective responsibilities and areas of cooperation between the Commission, the Greek authorities and EU agencies including: development and construction of a reception centre, improved management of arrivals, seamless asylum and return procedures and integration measures, reception conditions in line with EU law and adequate staff training, capacity and planning.
Earlier, the EU had agreed €121 million in funding for Greece for the construction of three smaller reception centres on the islands of Samos, Kos, and Leros, also to be completed by September 2021.
